hot flashes

  • Now that seclists.org has started providing its own RSS feeds, I'm redirecting requests for the "basic" newsfeeds directly to that site. The "verbose" scrapers will continue chugging along here for those who prefer that format. (23-Mar-2006)

  • Finally updated the copyright dates on the site. I've been working more on yourtradepubs.com than on djeaux.com during the past six months, and since August 29, I've been more than a little preoccupied with disaster recovery. Here are a few Hurricane Katrina photos. (29-Jan-2006)

  • Wrote a little Perl script to emulate a dynamic DNS service by uploading the current IP address of my Flintcreek home webserver server to the djeaux.com website. Since the Flintcreek server is running on a DSL connection, the IP address changes ever' now & then. This helps make it available to my friends. Send me an email if you'd like to know how to see this wonderful little remotely-generated webpage. (31-Jul-2005)

  • Updated all the verbose scrapers to correct date formatting in dates for individual articles & add a proper "NOSPAM" insertion into authors' email addresses. (18-Jul-2005)

  • Yesterday, I added verbose versions of all the security newsfeeds except three quarterlies (Firewall Wizards, Microsoft Security Bulletins & Nmap Hackers) that haven't had any messages posted to them so far this quarter. I also did a major restructuring of the newsfeeds listing, including clickable "Add-to-My Yahoo!" buttons. Today, I finally resurrected the NANOG newsfeed, giving me 30 feeds updated at least hourly. Whew! (12-Apr-2005)
  • Went crazy rewriting the "verbose" bugtraq RSS scraper & added 5 more "verbose" feeds (so far). Also added a validation check to the RSS list page. (10-Apr-2005)

  • Insecure.org (aka seclists.org) upgraded their mail archive software & all the security newsfeeds broke. After a week of work, I've gotten all of them operational again. The system is even a bit more streamlined & the "Ultrakludge" scripts now function completely without caching. (08-Apr-2005)

  • Finally located a "diamond tread" alumnium background for The Web J-Card™ Polygizmo & added a little PHP code so the background displays on the form but not the output j-card (which makes for less waste when printing). (22-Feb-2005)

  • After Powweb "solved" the LWP::UserAgent problem, the scripts that display RSS newsfeeds are functional again, as are the various sidebars. (22-Feb-2005)

  • Added the Civil War Letters of William Cliburn to the site. They have been up at my old Geocities site for quite a while. (02-Jan-2005)

  • Updated scrapers & other junk on the site for the new year! (1-Jan-2005)

  • After a desperate attempt to give the game away & an equally desperate come from behind effort in the closing minutes, USM pulled off a 35-29 overtime win over Houston & I updated the Stats Wizard. (7-Oct-2004)

  • I've been tinkering with XHTML & stylesheets lately. One of the "interesting" things about XHTML is the potential for table-less layouts. Here is a bit of a learning experience. It looks different in Microsoft Internet Explorer than in Mozilla, because MSIE doesn't handle some stylesheet positioning codes properly. Thank goodness for lorem ipsum. (5-Oct-2004)

  • Since Activeboard seems to have stabilized the HTML used in their message boards, I finally got around to re-writing the ultrakludge to scrape the AAUP-USM newsfeed, which is also available as a Mozilla sidebar. The RSS file is compatible with popular newsreaders, including the My Yahoo RSS beta. (18-Sept-2004)

  • Updated the USM Football Stats Wizard to reflect a season opening upset 21-17 road win against Nebraska! (11-Sept-2004)

  • Unrelated updates: Revised RSS stats on home page to 11 million, based on latest logs! Set up the USM Football Stats Wizard to display the upcoming 2004 schedule. With the legendary DylanPool offline, several newsfeeds (including the entire sports section of Dylanfreak Headline News) have been unavailable. Dylanfreak Headline News has been modified accordingly. (08-Sept-2004)

  • Almost constant changes in the mark-up on the AAUP-USM message board made it impossible for me to maintain the RSS scraper & sidebar. These have been deprecated, although only a few people noticed & nobody complained! (Aug-2004)

  • With the closing of the new-legendary Fire Shelby message board, the USM Chapter of AAUP has adopted the discussions. Fortunately, it runs on the same system as Fire Shelby did, so it wasn't hard to adapt the scraper to produce an RSS newsfeed for the new message board. There's a new Mozilla sidebar, too, for those who are so inclined. The old Fire Shelby newsfeed & sidebar now point to the new AAUP-USM content. (28-May-2004)

  • Set up a Mozilla sidebar for the ResearchBuzz newsfeed. (13-May-2004)

  • Wrote an ultrakludge to scrape the Fire Shelby message board to an RSS newsfeed, updated every 10 minutes. I've also added a Fire Shelby Mozilla sidebar. (08-May-2004)

  • Changed the common menubar once again, removing the about djeaux link from active duty. Removed dead links to the bobdylan.com discussion newsfeeds from Dylanfreak Headline News. (20-Mar-2004)

  • Fixed all Computer Security scraper programs to roll into the New Year. (1-Jan-2004)

  • Updated the USM Stats Wizard to show a disappointing 17-zip shutout by Utah in the Liberty Bowl. (31-Dec-2003)

  • Released MiniScore for Women's Gymnastics version 2.26. The User's Guide has been updated to reflect the enhancements in data import & export functions. (30-Nov-2003)

  • Updated the USM Football Stats Wizard to include a 38-21 win over East Carolina, clinching the C-USA championship. Added the 2003 Liberty Bowl to the schedule. (30-Nov-2003)

  • Despite an amazing 22-point comeback bid by TCU, Southern Miss stuffed the 9th ranked Horned Frogs 40-28 & I updated the USM Football Stats Wizard. USM wins the C-USA championship!

  • Chalked up another "W" (31-10, spoiling Houston's homecoming) on the USM Football Stats Wizard. Whoo hoo! Mercy! Coming on the heels of a convincing 48-3 trouncing of U-La-LA (Louisiana-Lafayette) last week, looks like the Eagles have decided to start putting points on the board! (8-Nov-2003)

  • Modified the common menubar to include a link to the Polygizmo. (30-Oct-2003)

  • After 2 months of testing, latest Legendary Web J-Card Polygizmo has been moved from beta to "production." The new version includes color theme presets as well as spine text & background colors. (29-Oct-2003)

  • Updated the USM Football Stats Wizard with today's 27-6 win over South Florida! (25-Oct-2003)

  • Added a separate page for the Computer Security & bobdylan.com Mozilla sidebars, modified the menubar & relocated "Link Farm" to the small, upper menu line. (19-Oct-2003)

  • Just added a new RSS feed scraped from the North American Network Operators Group mailing list archives at Merit, Inc.. Still a little tweaking to be done... (18-Oct-2003)

  • Very busy this month & failed to add a few hot flashes... Three more games have been added to the USM Football Stats Wizard: wins against conference rivals UAB & Memphis, and a tough loss to Nebraska. The Expanded Bugtraq newsfeed has been added to the main list of RSS's available here, although I've still not gotten around to fixing the date format in the XML. Oh well... (28-Sept-2003)

  • The USM Football Stats Wizard has been updated to include game one of what looks like more of the sad same, a 34-2 loss to California. (30-Aug-2003)

  • While reviewing my Webalizer reports for the past week, I noticed a fair number of visitors coming from a Scott Granneman column at SecurityFocus. Well, holy Toledo, batman, can you dig it? Scroll down to the second section, "Blogs of Note" & right there in the first paragraph djeaux.com gets a nice plug for scraping one of two "essential" RSS feeds for security pros, the verbose bugtraq RSS. And then, another sentence saying "you should check it out"!! (7-Aug-2003)

  • Some very minor stylesheet tweaks have been added to the Polygizmo. (6-Aug-2003)

  • A complete rewrite of Web J-Card Polygizmo is now "public." Written in PHP, the new version allows you to upload your own images or enter the URL of an image on the web. Control of fonts, colors & styles has been expanded. Plus, the system can be linked externally -- all setlists Dylan Pool now feature "Create J-Card" buttons! (01-Aug-2003)

  • Once again, the menubar has been revised to add (or rather, reinstate) an "about djeaux.com" page. Also, over the past several days, I've set up a second Moveable Type blog for my daughter, but she hasn't added any journal entries yet. (27-July-2003)

  • Revised the MiniScore User's Guide to correspond to the version 2.25d upgrade that I posted to Handango last week. (20-July-2003)

  • MiniScore version 2.25d has been uploaded to Handango.com. The user can now set the backup bit for the meet/score database, allowing it to be backed up during HotSync operations. More tweaks to the registration checker, too. (11-July-2003)

  • Looks like eBay changed the format of their category listings, breaking the eBay scraper used for the classified ads at Dylanfreak. For now, I've gone with eBay's JavaScript system to display shopping items. Bah! (3-July-2003)

  • Added a Netscape/Mozilla sidebar installer for Computer Security News. This sidebar features the latest posts to the 15 security mailing lists that djeaux.com syndicates as RSS newsfeeds. (9-June-2003)

  • Set up a bobdylan.com sidebar for Netscape 7 & Mozilla browsers. The sidebar includes links to the latest posts to the bobdylan.com discussions, plus a handy lyric search tool. (7-June-2003)

  • Rearranged the menubar & added a projects page to showcase stuff that isn't part of the regular site. Also installed Corvar's Mozilla Sidebar Installer script to give RSS users another way to access the newsfeeds. Changes are reflected in the newsfeeds page as well. (06-June-2003)

  • Finished "Scythe," the 2nd-generation UltraKludge RSS newsfeed generator. Scythe scrapes an extra layer deep in an archive to produce verbose item descriptions. The first target is the bugtraq mailing list. (05-June-2003)

  • Linked several of my "classic" Bob Dylan concert reviews to the index of articles, because folks never seem to be able to locate the relocated Flintcreek website. (3-June-2003)

  • Finally got around to rewriting the SSI script that produces the menubars so the logo & Commission Junction banner feed are placed automatically along with the menubar. Nobody would notice this unless they read the source or catch a very slight change in the menubar position on one page in whole the site! (2-June-2003)

  • Tweaked the main Cascading Style Sheet for the site to eliminate the baby blue background except on the main page insets. This is probably of no importance to anyone but me, but this is my "site diary," anyway! (31-May-2003)

  • Added HWY61-L & the Dansk Dylan Netværk to Dylanfreak Headline News, bringing the total number of newsfeeds presented there to 20 in addition to the special tour weather link. (9-May-2003)

  • Developed another UltraKludge variant to scrape headlines from Dansk Dylan Netværk. The character coding needed some special tweaking to work in the FasterSlasher newsfeed display, but it wasn't too tough! (9-May-2003)

  • Adapted the UltraKludge news scraper to RSSify the HWY61-L Bob Dylan mailing list, providing a more frequently updated rec.music.dylan newsfeed than the existing Google Group method. (5-May-2003)

  • Restructured the RSS newsfeed listing to include clickable links for adding channels directly to Radio Userland & AmphetaDesk news aggregators. (7-Apr-2003)

  • Relocated the Legendary Web J-Card Polygizmo from its old home at EDLIS Centrale to this site. This is the first step in a complete rewrite of the Polygizmo, hopefully permitting vertical text for the j-card spines & user-uploadable images. (26-Mar-2003)

  • Installed Moveable Type web log system to learn how it works. Take a look. (20-Mar-2003)

  • Several small tweaks to the RSS scraper to add encoding type to the newsfeed files. (18-Mar-2003)

  • Continually tinkering with the automated main menu, I've taken the old services page offline. In its place is the link farm, which includes a site map & links to some favorite sites. (28-Feb-2003)

  • Prepared a download zip archive for the FasterSlasher newsfeed headline display script after procrastinating for several months. The download includes the (fairly uncommon) RSSLite Perl module & full instructions for installing it in a local "lib" directory if it's not already installed you the server. (12-Feb-2003)

  • Set up a demo online tool for analyzing multiple-choice exam items. The full version includes a data file upload utility that has been disabled here. This is an ongoing project at my "day job." For some perverse reason, the scripts aren't working on the college's server, so the demo is here to keep my nursing department happy! (12-Feb-2003)

  • Set up a headline box on the djeaux.com main page to display the latest posts to selected Security Mailing Lists. The headline box is time-triggered & a different mailing list is featured every five minutes! (22-Jan-2003)

  • Bob Dylan news, sports & weather will heat up in early February, when "The Poet Laureate of Rock Music" tours the Land of Oz. Be sure to follow all the action at Dylanfreak Headline News. (18-Jan-2003)

  • MiniScore 2.25 has been released. This upgrade features team scoring by event & single team import capabilities. For the deep skinny, check out the Online User's Guide. (15-Jan-2003)

  • With the rollover to the new month, quarter & year, some problems with the Computer & Network Security newsfeeds became apparent. This issues have now (hopefully) been resolved. Many of the mailing lists from which these newsfeeds are scraped are pretty empty, particularly the quarterly lists, but that will resolve itself soon enough! Also, all the copyright lines throughout the site have been updated -- what fun! (01-Jan-2003)

  • Added a newsfeed from hacktivismo.com to Geek-Tech News (31-Dec-2002)

  • Entered the last score (a 33-23 heartbreak loss to Oklahoma State) in the Southern MIss Online Stats Wizard. The next update will be made when the USM athletic office releases the 2003 schedule. (27-Dec-2002)

  • Set up separate scrapers for IDS Focus & Incidents due to weird things happening in the cronjob that made the "mass scraper" clog up. (18-Dec-2002)

  • Set up separate scraper for Info Security News because the source HTML is in latest-to-earliest order instead of earliest-to-latest order. (16-Dec-2002)

  • MiniScore for Women's Gymnastics version 2.24, featuring full data import-export capabilities & user-selected export formats, has been released at Handango.com & the User Guide has been updated, too. (14-Dec-2002)

  • More RSS newsfeeds scraped from insecure.org, bringing the total to 15 security lists. (02-Dec-2002)

  • Added a download page for FasterSlasher, a Perl CGI for displaying RSS newsfeeds. It's just a CodeLister source code display for now... Also wrote a scraper for the security mailing list archives at insecure.org. These are extensive lists pertaining to network security, software & hardware. A dedicated security news page is now up! (25-Nov-2002)

  • Updated the USM Online Stats Wizard to document the Eagles continued downward spiral as they dropped a 31-10 game to Tulane. (23-Nov-2002)

  • Added bobdylan.com discussion links to dylanfreak headline news, plus scrapers to retrieve items in four eBay categories.

  • Added another Dylan newsfeed (Google News Beta Search), courtesy of Arlo, plus a listing of rec.music.folk posts scraped from Google News. Also, the Dylanfreak Headline News has been split into News & Opinion and the Sports Section, where Dylan Pool scores are displayed. (10-Nov-2002)

  • Updated the Southern Miss Online Stats Wizard database to show the Eagles much-needed 20-13 victory over Alabama-Birmingham. (09-Nov-2002)

  • Inspired by a front-page feature at Expecting Rain, the premier unofficial Bob Dylan website, I scripted a "scraper" that retrieves the last dozen rec.music.dylan posts from Google News & designed a "newspaper-style" logo for dylanfreak.djeaux.com. The new site took over 1,400 hits in the first day! (06-Nov-2002)

  • Thanks to Arlo of the world-famous Dylan Pool, this site is the first to have a Bob Dylan newsfeed! So far, we have the latest concert setlist & the top individual & team scorers in the Dylan Pool plus threads from the Pool Phorum discussions refreshed every quarter hour. The newsfeed project is called "splashdot" -- in the Pool, get it? There's more to come! (04-Nov-2002)

  • To speed up loading of news pages with SSIs from "slasher", I've begun parcelling the newsfeeds to sub-pages, a half dozen or so to the page, depending on how many links the newsfeed usually contains. My current favorites remain on this page, but there will be lots more on other pages. To keep up with all the additions, the newsfeed menu listing is now handled via SSI as well. (03-Nov-2002)

  • MiniScore 2.23f has been released at Handango! This upgrade adds the option to export data in either tab- or comma-delimited format with the All Around total score included in the output. There are also some enhancements for checkbox behavior in the preferences form & the registration code algorithm now accomodates apostrophes in the user's Hotsync ID. (31-Oct-2002)

  • Expanded my rdf newsfeed reading & formatting Perl CGI, "slasher" to slurp in more headlines. This is an experimental script. When it's a little cleaner, I'll make it available in the free CGI list... Right now, most of the newsfeeds are scheduled to update according to whatever schedule is given on the publisher's site; however, it looks like some of the sites don't really have "new news" as often as they update their backend files. So scheduling is something I plan to tweak. Look for more newsfeeds to be added! (31-Oct-2002)

  • Updated the Southern Miss Online Stats Wizard database to include the Eagles' miserable showing against the TCU Horned Frogs. Bah! No Liberty Bowl this year, I guess. But one thing -- I don't have to go through my life catching hell about being a "horny toad" like the TCU grads... (30-Oct-2002)

  • Added this page to showcase changes to the site & newsfeeds. Moved the Free Webmaster Tools listing to the articles index. (29-Oct-2002)
